The point is to get into the head of the opponent and through distraction, self-doubt, etc. Saying "I wrecked your mama last night!" is somewhere in the middle, depending on the circumstances and the people involved. This is all well and good with two adults who willingly applied for this as a profession, but when random members of the public are involved? The stated purpose of trash talk, outside of being a show for the audience, is to "get inside the opponent's head".
